#SpringHorror DNF Review: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

I just can't make myself do it!

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, Narrated by Scott Brick
Audiobook Horror Fiction
Released November 2006, 3+ Hours Unabridged
Amazon ♦ Goodreads
When a brute of a man tramples an innocent girl, apparently out of spite, two bystanders catch the fellow and force him to pay reparations to the girl's family. The brute's name is Edward Hyde. A respected lawyer, Utterson, hears this story and begins to unravel the seemingly manic behavior of his best friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and his connection with Hyde. Several months earlier, Utterson had drawn up an inexplicable will for the doctor naming Hyde as his heir in the event that he disappears.

My Thoughts:

I tried to listen to this audiobook this morning but it was just too wordy for me. I mean, I know it's a book, they're made up entirely of words but these words were not at all interesting to me. They were boring, dry, tedious words and they did not please me nor did they scare me. They made me sleepy is about all they did. And I had no a-hole cat around to wake me up if I fell asleep driving.

A man spies another man trample his way over a young girl. The decent man chases down the dastardly man and begins, what I can only guess because I'm a quitter, his own little investigation into who this man is. I only guess this because he says,“If he be Mr. Hyde" he had thought, "I shall be Mr. Seek.”

I know I'm supposed to pretend I'm smart and struggle my way through this classic but I have too many other books vying for my attention that I know I will find interesting so I'm not going to struggle my way through another few hours with this sucker.

  1. Ugh sorry this didn't work for you. You are smart for not struggling through it if you weren't enjoying it.

    1. Simply the worst. I only have so many books left in me before the world blows up. It could be tomorrow for all I know and I want them to be fantastic!

  4. I struggle so hard with Dickens and feel I should finish just b/c I want to read/listen to some classics now and then, but oh the struggle. I've stuck to his novellas and haven't reached for any of his bigger novels. Good for you to give it the heave ho and reach for something else.

    1. Yeah, I just don't have the patience! Good luck to you with Dickens though :)

  5. I actually love this book, but I strongly believe you should never force yourself to read a book you're not enjoying! Life is too short, and time too precious to be spent on books you don't like. :)

  6. I feel like most classics are too wordy. That's usually my main issue with them. I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would though, sorry to hear you didn't like it!

  7. This is interesting as I just watched a booktuber who loved this book. Interesting to see different takes on things. :) I have always wanted to try this one.

    1. Give it a try. It might just be me and my lack of patience :)

  8. This is funny because I tried to listen to it not all that long ago. I didn't get very far with it either. I thought that maybe I just wasn't in the mood but I will probably never be in the mood if I am being honest.

  10. I've never read this but don't think it would be for me? And yeah classics can be that way- I find very few that I like lolol.

    1. You might want to skip it then or grab it for free and try it out that way.

  11. Classics can be tough! I've never tried this myself, but I'd probably have the same reaction.

    1. I go into classics with a little fear in my heart but there are a few that don't disappoint. Sadly, this wasn't one of them.

  12. I just made my way through a classic and hated every moment of it. AND I didn't even freaking understand the twist. There wasn't really a twist, you really have to read between the lines to find it. And I mean really read between the lines. I had no idea. I'm sad this one didn't work for you because it was on my list, but forget that. I'm not wasting anymore time on classics this year!

I think it's that we want something different now. The slow steep into horror was great then. Not so much now.
