DNF Review: Caraval by Stephanie Garber

The one where the blurb will be far longer than the review.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber, Narrated by‎ Rebecca Soler
Audiobook

Welcome, welcome to Caraval! Stephanie Garber's sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett's long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season's Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

My (ahem) Thoughts:

I started this book this morning thinking it was something else. That something else was supposed to be The Night Circus. I have no idea why I confused the two but after listening to over an hour of this book I realized it is not meant for the likes of me.

I'm sure sisters Scarlett & Tella have all sorts of glorious and lovely adventures and perhaps some insta-love with a handsome stranger or two after they escape their super evil daddy but I'm not in the mood for this sort of book and will likely delete it from my Ipod to make room for something that will suit my grouchiness better. Young love and overblown writing no longer do it for me.

  1. Sorry to hear you didn't like this one more. I can't think of any books that I haven't finished for quite some time.

    1. Ah, that's alright. I'm just starting to learn that it's sometimes better to quit a book than to force myself through it.

  3. Sorry this didn't work for you. This book was nowhere near my radar just because the synopsis didn't really hook me in. So much hype for this book, though.

    1. Glad I'm on my own here. There are just too many books out there and I am so easily confused.

  6. Oh, big shock. I hate that sensation of thinking I'm getting one thing and get something else like a sour candy among the sweet. Sometimes it can make me like it, but sounds like nope for this one. I confess I read a few reviews and didn't think it would interest me.
    Next book!

    1. Yeah, I usually get halfway through before realizing my mistake! I have exceeded my hold limit (5) at overdrive but am going to request it as soon as something else comes in and a spot frees up.

  10. Oh, noooo. What a mix up. I have The Night Circus. Let me know if you ever want to buddy read it! I tried listening to the audio, but I've listened to Jim Dale read Harry Potter so many times, I kept trying to set The Night Circus at Hogwarts. LOL. I used to have Caraval on my wishlist, but there were some elements in reviews that made me change my mind.
