Graphic Novel Review: Saga, Vol. 1

Image
I continue my 5 star streak. I can hardly believe it! Saga Volume One by  Brian K. Vaughan (Writer), Fiona Staples (Artist) Graphic Novel Released October 2012 Amazon  ♦  Goodreads When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.  From bestselling writer Brian K. Vaughan, Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in this sexy, subversive drama for adults.  My Thoughts: Why do I always wait so long to read the best things and instead read so many of the not-so-great things? Saga Volume 1 is one of the best things. The artwork is beautiful, the dialogue is snarky, the characters are stunningly gorgeous and it is jam packed with action, blood-shed and weird imagery. There is nothing not to love here in this beautifully unhinged spa...

Can't Wait Wednesday: Lady Castle by Delilah Dawson

Image
Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme at  Wishful Endings  to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous  Jill at Breaking the Spine . To find out more about linking in visit the Can't-Wait Wednesday page at Wishful Endings  here . Lady Castle by Delilah S. Dawson Scheduled Release: October 24, 2017 Amazon  ♦  Goodreads When the King and all the men of the castle die, it’s time for the women to knight up. When King Mancastle and his mighty vassals ride off on a crusade, the women left behind are not at all put out—that’s a lot less armor polishing to do. Of course, when the men get themselves eaten by a dragon and leave a curse that attracts monsters to the castle . . . well, the women take umbrage with that. Now, Merinor, the blacksmith’s wife is King, Princess Aeve is the Captain, and the on...

Graphic Novel Review: Dread by Clive Barker

Image
Dread by Clive Barker, Graphic Horror Novel I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars & here's why: I actually hit up the TBR tower for this one. I bought it brand new. In 1993! I read Dread in Books of Blood Volume 2 a few years back and found it a bit difficult to get into. This graphic novel still makes the skin crawl but cuts out a lot of the tedious talk that bogged down the novella. The artwork is dread-worthy, washed with a dark-hued palette that certainly fits the tone of the story. This isn't my favorite Barker short but this version is worth seeking out of if you’re a fan. Because I’m super lazy, here’s my plot synopsis/review of the novella from 2010. Stephen Grace is a university student who catches the eye of a teacher named Quaid. Stephen is afraid of public speaking but Quaid instructs him not only to give voice to his fears but to analyze them. Quaid is fascinated with dread in all its facets and revels in learning more about it. I have to ad...

Graphic Novel Review: X-Files Classics: Ground Zero by Kevin J. Anderson

Image
3 of 5 stars This graphic novel is an authorized adaptation of a bestselling X-Files novel that I haven’t read. The book may be awesome but I’ll never know because I have too much to read and this version was a little “meh” for me. I’ve always preferred the monster of the week stories to the gov’t conspiracy plots. I guess this one is a little of both but it just didn’t thrill me. The opening panel features a group of protesters surrounding a research facility. Apparently the evil scientist inside is up to no damn good. The scientist gets a suspicious package in the mail containing a vial of black powder and, uh oh, the lights start flickering, his skin goes all tingly and KABOOM! He’s frizzle fried just like that. Enter Scully and Mulder on the scene. They start poking around because this is an X-Files book and the scientist’s death is a wee bit abnormal.  They don’t get very far though because the scientist’s project is top secret and the military intends to keep it that ...

Graphic Novel Review: X-Files Classics Vol. 1

X-Files Classics Vol. 1 by Stefan Petrucha My rating: 3 of 5 stars I did my usual 30 minutes of internet research and learned that this volume of X-Files comics were written back in the early days of the series. They are not book adaptions, nor were they ever tv episodes. This volume contains issues #1 – 9. I couldn’t wait to dig in to this because, well, original X-Files material (!) and the return of Mulder. But, most tragically, the magic was not quite here. It showed up in glimpses but mostly I found myself a little bored and daydreaming for something just a wee bit more exciting. So anyway, on to the issues. Do Not Open Until Christmas starts off with a dead body and a stolen religious prophecy. Though the body is dead, it smells of roses. People think it’s been touched by the hand of God hisownself. Scully thinks otherwise. And Mulder? Well, he’s Mulder and thinks conspiracy! Cover up! Angels are aliens! There was some fun dialogue here. “You’re ...
