The Bloody Chamber And Other Stories by Angela Carter | Horror Fiction Review

Image
My 2 Cents for Free! The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter Released January 1979, 162 pgs Source: Bought with my own $ Goodreads  |  Amazon Eeek I don't know how to rate it. It's probably a 2 but one of the stories was a 4 and it was the longest so I'll go with a 3 for now. I've been wanting to read this book for ages. I bought a used copy years ago, promptly buried it under other books and about a decade later forgot about it and bought a new reprint. I also somehow ended up with a copy from Audible. Ugh, why do I do this? I should've loved this dark and haunting and beautifully written book but I also should've read it when I bought it the first time. I did not love this dark and haunting and beautifully written book much at all. I don't know if it just hasn't aged well or if I've read too many dark and haunting and beautifully written fairytale retellings but I was mostly bored and annoyed. The first story, The Bloody Chamber, started things off rig...

Hello, everyone! I hope you found some time to read last week or were at least able to take some time for yourself. Staying mostly offline has helped me get so much done. I planted a wildflower garden, visited the old rock in Plymouth, MA and watched some birds who were much more exciting than the rock 😆 Recent Reads & Listens  I'm slowly catching up on my review postings but I'm starting to feel like I have it all under control for the first time in ages. Here's what I posted to the blog since my last check-in. Clicking on a cover will open a new window to my review. ⭐⭐ ⭐1/2 ⭐⭐1/2 ⭐⭐ ⭐1/2 ⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐⭐ ⭐ Additions to the TBR NONE! My no-buy ban is still in place. I even went to B&N, looked around and bought nothing. The suckage. Not buying books hasn't made a dent in my tbr pile yet though, I am sad to say. I'm still working on review books, book chat books and my IRL book group books. One day I will actually get through something I actually bought ages ago 😬 I...

Friday's TBR

Image
Happy Friday! I didn't think it would ever get here. I've been ignoring social media (always for the best), puppy sitting this handsome little devil, and reading some books. I've been not so great about writing reviews though but what else is new. At least I'm reading books so I suppose I have to be happy about that. What's everyone reading this weekend? I finished DEAD SILENCE by S.A. Barnes a week or so ago for the Ladies of Horror Fiction Readathon we have going on to celebrate Women In Horror Month and did actually write a short review so I'll try to get it posted next week. This is the ARC copy that I dropped in the Little Free Library. I hope someone finds it, reads it and gets addicted to spooky fiction! If you'd like to join us for our April Readalong, we'll be reading The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris. You can find all the information  HERE! Get Out meets The Stepford Wives in this electric debut about the tension that unfurls when tw...

Friday's TBR

Image
Happy Friday Bloglandia!  I hope you're all doing better than my cat here. Patrick is super grumpy because he's lost his window seat while the puppy has been recovering. I think he wants to throw me in the oven, to be honest. I probably deserve it too! What's everyone reading? I just finished this one and will post the review on Monday. It's good stuff if you like gothics. And I'm planning to get to work on this bunch: In a neighborhood known as the Bramble Patch, the Lyons family endures despite poverty, racism, and the ghoulish appetites of an underworld kingpin called the Barghest. As the years pass and the neighborhood falls into decay, along with the town that surrounds it, what's left of the Bramble Patch will learn the saying is true: These bones are gonna rise again. Titanic meets The Shining in S.A. Barnes’ Dead Silence, a SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn...

2022 TBR Stacks

Image
Hi everyone! It's finally time to say good riddance to 2021! I had a terrific year of reading but really that's about all of the good I can say about it. I'm not doing a Top 10 or anything like that this year because I am worn out. I did do a silly tweet thread if you want to see some favorites:   https://twitter.com/BarksBooks/status/1476294896025702403?s=20 I'm not going to make any resolutions this year because life is too complicated and I always end up feeling like a failure when I don't keep any of them.  I'm looking forward to reading some of these and maybe a few from my tbr piles that have been waiting for years 😮 The only thing I hope to do is keep up a steady pace of reading, continue my work with Ladies of Horror Fiction and post to this blog more regularly - something I seem to consistently fail to do.  Stay safe, keep blogging and let me know if you've read any in this pile of mine 👇

The September TBR

Image
Hey, everyone out there! I hope you're reading some amazing books! I'm most definitely going to end this slump I've been experiencing for the last two weeks and read a few of these in September. My head has just been everywhere but the books but I know these will all be amazing. Where should I start?! I hope you all have a relaxing weekend filled with lots of five star reads ♥

October's Reading List

Image
What's on Your October Reading List? Hi everyone! I have missed you and I have missed my blog. The past few months have been madness and I have been so scattered and off-kilter in 2020. I've been reading but posting my reviews has been a challenge. Going forward I plan to work on knocking out my final review commitments and then I'll be working on Ladies of Horror Fiction and my personal tbr pile. Yep, you read that right. I'm going to actually read some of the books I bought YEARS ago. Or that's my plan, at least.  I'm going to be blasting through a few audios and plan to get through some of these physical copies this month: The House That Fell From the Sky by Patrick Delaney When twenty-nine-year-old Scarlett Vantassel comes to the conclusion that her life doesn’t resemble any of the things she actually wanted for herself, she drops out of school and moves back home, attempting to reconnect with the people she left behind. But a shadow falls over her return o...

TBR Thursday (2)

I have fallen down on my plan to read books in an organized order on week 2 of this post. Is anyone surprised? I momentarily forgot I was supposed to start WILDER GIRLS by Rory Power for the  Ladies of Horror Fiction Goodreads chat. So my tbr photo will be the same as last week. How convenient for me, lol. Up next in the TBR:  Anyhow, next up is STILL Chris Sorensen's THE HUNGRY ONES which is a sequel to his book THE NIGHTMARE ROOM   &  VIOLET by Scott Thomas. This is by the author who wrote KILL CREEK  . Currently Reading: WILDER GIRLS   by Rory Power is my current read and so far it's pretty fantastic. It has some knarly body horror and imperfect characters. I like it a lot more than I did last months pick of  HERE THERE ARE MONSTERS which is a relief. I ended up DNFing that one and am not sure if I'll ever get back to it. YA isn't my #1 go to so fingers-crossed that I continue to love Wilder Girls. What's up next for...

TBR Thursday (1)

Do you plan out your next read or are you a fly by the seat of the pants type of reader? I'm the latter but am trying to force myself to be the former and hope these kinds of posts will help me stay on the right path. At least until I get my to be reviewed stack finished up! I am embarrassed to admit that one of these books slipped through the cracks because I forgot to add it to my Goodreads bookshelf until yesterday. And I rely on that bookshelf to keep me from missing stuff. Ugh, why am I such a mess? Anyhow, next up is Chris Sorensen's THE HUNGRY ONES which is a sequel to his book THE NIGHTMARE ROOM   which I liked a whole bunch. I've been looking forward to it and regret that I accidentally put it off for this long.  Also up soon is VIOLET by Scott Thomas. This is by the author who wrote KILL CREEK and I loved that book so I have high hopes. Seeing as I'm one of the last to actually get it read, I've been doing my best to avoid all of the spoile...
