Hot Mess Heroes

Inspired by my most recent read, Deepest Desires of a Wicked Duke (who was indeed very wicked), I'm compiling another list of some of my favorite books. This time I'm featuring heroes who are self destructive, hot messes. I wouldn't want to live with 'em but I love, love, love reading about them! As always, please share your favorites so I can add more to my list!

Lovely WildDeepest Desires of a Wicked Duke by Sharon Page (historical romance)

The Duke of Sin believes he's no good. His past was filled with terrible things beyond his control and his sexual desires are on the darker side. Instead of making a life with the woman he loved, he tossed it all away and spent a decade having fun times at orgies. Not exactly hero material, eh? But I very much enjoyed the story anyway.

Addicted by Charlotte Featherstone (historical romance)

Lindsay is addicted to opium. Seriously and devastatingly addicted to opium. This love story doesn't gloss over his issues. It's dark. It's ugly. It's heartbreaking and I loved every word.

Burn Down the NightBurn Down the Night by M.O'Keefe (contemporary romance)

Max is the leader of a motorcycle club and he is messed up in the head. Joan is a woman who is equally messed up in the head. Together they are magical. Well, once they get over agonizing over themselves, that is. If a double dose of angst sounds like your thing, this one is for you!

9968513One Real Thing by Anah Crowe (mm romance)

Holly and Nick are best friends until Nick marries a woman who drives a wedge between them. Holly can't deal with losing his best friend and the man he's secretly loved most of his life. He self-medicates with drugs and dangerous behavior and has just about hit rock bottom. This book is a pain-fest, I'm not gonna lie. Holly is a disaster but I was rooting for him all the way.

Chase In Shadow by Amy Lane (mm romance)

Chase is damaged and imperfect and makes oh-so-many poor decisions and his story may likely destroy you. It's dark and grueling and that's why I love it so very much.

Life After Joe by Harper FoxLife After Joe by Harper Fox (mm romance)

Matt was devastated when the love of his life walked away and left him empty. Suffering from a deep depression, he coped using booze and sex to wash away the pain and now he's a drunk and his career in ruins. Matt is completely broken when he meets a new man with his own deeply hidden pain.

Breath by Sloan Parker (mm romance)

Both of these guys have the angst and hot mess thing going pretty good. I have to admit, as much as I love the angst, this particular double dose of it nearly did me in!

And Now One To Avoid . . .

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (gothic romance)

Holy hell, is this ever one to avoid! Never in my reading life have I encountered such an unlikable and mentally unstable hero as Erik. There is self-loathing and needy and then, well then, there is Erik.

“You must know that I am made of death, from head to foot, and it is a corpse who loves you and adores you and will never, never leave you!”

My ranty review can be found here.

  1. Ahh, I like The Phantom of the Though I admit to have only seen the movie version and not read the book...I might be spoiled to he

    1. Oh, the book is an entirely different beast! I loved the movies and various versions of the story . . and then I read the source material. Ahhhhh! The men in this book are so needy and whiny and unromantic.

  2. LOL Max was fantastic. I loved they were both just so messed up. I'll have to check out a couple of these :D

    1. They were such a mess but yet so perfect together. Hope you find something you like here Anna :)
