The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw | Book Review

Image
This is a dark and beautiful tale of body horror. The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw Released May 2023 Source: Received for Review Consideration Goodreads   | Amazon From USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Khaw comes The Salt Grows Heavy, a razor-sharp and bewitching fairytale of discovering the darkness in the world, and the darkness within oneself. You may think you know how the fairytale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes. On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three 'saints' who control them. The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruellest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive. My 2 Cents for Free! Khaw’s previous release, Nothing

House of Rot by Danger Slater Released June 2023 Source: Received for Review Consideration Goodreads   | Amazon The pink mold growing on the walls isn’t the worst thing about Elenya and Myles’ brand new fixer upper. There’s also the inexplicable footsteps in the night; the sealed-over windows and doors; the neighbor that hears their screams but can’t be bothered to help. Soon, there’s no leaving at all. No hope of cleaning. And that encroaching mold? It’s practically become a second skin. Welcome to the House of Rot . You’re never getting out. My 2 Cents for Free! Maeve Fly by C.J. Leede | Book Review

This book delivers on its cover. Maeve Fly by CJ Leede Released June 2023 Source: Received for Review Consideration Goodreads  | Amazon By day, Maeve Fly works at the happiest place in the world as every child’s favorite ice princess. By the neon night glow of the Sunset Strip, Maeve haunts the dive bars with a drink in one hand and a book in the other, imitating her misanthropic literary heroes. But when Gideon Green - her best friend’s brother - moves to town, he awakens something dangerous within her, and the world she knows suddenly shifts beneath her feet. Untethered, Maeve ditches her discontented act and tries on a new persona. A bolder, bloodier one, inspired by the pages of American Psycho. Step aside Patrick Bateman, it’s Maeve’s turn with the knife. My 2 Cents for Free! Lookie, Maeve Fly has a little bit of something for almost everyone: ☑️ A dark and spicy-sweet hockey romance w/ bite 🦷 ☑️ Creative lessons on how to use your styling tools and new uses for eggs (how did I

Horror Film Friday Returns with Gargoyles

It's been a while since I posted a ridiculous horror movie review because I usually watch them with glee and am too lazy to take any notes and then I forget everything the next morning. Anyhow, here's my recent experience with a childhood favorite written at 1am when I couldn't sleep - when I do all my best writing haha. Have you seen it? Gargoyles 1972 Directed by Bill L. Norton Synopsis WATCH OUT! THE GARGOYLES ARE HERE After receiving word about a mysterious carcass/skeleton unearthed in the Arizona desert, a father and his daughter decide to remove it from the burial grounds for further study. Once they do so, they, as well as the town, are besieged by a colony of gargoyles living in some nearby caverns. My Two Cents for Free! “Bones. I smell old bones.” Mmmmm When I was a weird little kid this movie used to play on Creature Double Feature and my sister and I would run around with the other bratty neighborhood kids and pretend we were Gargoyles every time they played it

This novella packs in a full novel's worth of surprises! Below by Laurel Hightower Released March 2022 Source: Purchased with my own $ Goodreads   | Amazon HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO HELP A STRANGER? While driving through the mountains of West Virginia during a late-night snowstorm, a recently divorced woman experiences bizarre electrical problems, leaving her with little choice but to place her trust with a charismatic truck driver. But when an unexplainable creature with haunting red eyes gets between them, she is forced to make one of the toughest decisions of her life. Will she abandon the stranger who kept her safe—or will she climb down below, where reality has shapeshifted into a living nightmare? My 2 Cents for Free! This book is so damn unsettling. Suburban Hell by Maureen Kilmer | Book Review

I may simply be too grouchy for horror comedy 😅 Suburban Hell by Maureen Kilmer Released August 2022 Source: Library Borrow Goodreads   | Amazon A Chicago cul-de-sac is about to get a new neighbor...of the demonic kind.     Amy Foster considers herself lucky. After she left the city and moved to the suburbs, she found her place quickly with neighbors Liz, Jess, and Melissa, snarking together from the outskirts of the PTA crowd. One night during their monthly wine get-together, the crew concoct a plan for a clubhouse She Shed in Liz’s backyard—a space for just them, no spouses or kids allowed.       But the night after they christen the She Shed, things start to feel . . . off. They didn’t expect Liz’s little home-improvement project to release a demonic force that turns their quiet enclave into something out of a nightmare. And that’s before the homeowners’ association gets wind of it.       Even the calmest moms can’t justify the strange burn marks, self-moving dolls, and horrible sm

Hello, everyone! I hope you found some time to read last week or were at least able to take some time for yourself. Staying mostly offline has helped me get so much done. I planted a wildflower garden, visited the old rock in Plymouth, MA and watched some birds who were much more exciting than the rock 😆 Recent Reads & Listens  I'm slowly catching up on my review postings but I'm starting to feel like I have it all under control for the first time in ages. Here's what I posted to the blog since my last check-in. Clicking on a cover will open a new window to my review. ⭐⭐ ⭐1/2 ⭐⭐1/2 ⭐⭐ ⭐1/2 ⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐⭐ ⭐ Additions to the TBR NONE! My no-buy ban is still in place. I even went to B&N, looked around and bought nothing. The suckage. Not buying books hasn't made a dent in my tbr pile yet though, I am sad to say. I'm still working on review books, book chat books and my IRL book group books. One day I will actually get through something I actually bought ages ago 😬 I
