Netgalley Update, Halloween Bingo & A Picture of My Boyfriend!

There's still time to get your card for Halloween Bingo over at Booklikes. Visit the Halloween Bingo 2017 thread to learn more (or just ask me here). It's fun, it's free and the more spooky books in my feed, the better!

Netgalley Update:

Netgalley has responded to reader/reviewer concerns (and possibly prevented a new shitstorm of downvoting campaigns) by promising to remove "NO" voting option via a Facebook comment on their page.

I will believe it when I see because as of today it has not been removed. Note the date they posted their response. I'm not a programmer but does it really take this long? I guess we'll have to wait and see what all of these changes are really about. Personally, I see no need for any voting options on Netgalley. Does anyone actually go to Netgalley to do anything other than nab new books?!

NetGalley We love our community of book advocates. The dedication of our members is what makes NetGalley truly special. We hope it has always been apparent how much value we place on your feedback. For any changes we've made on NetGalley (large or small), the input we receive from both our member and publisher communities is an essential piece in deciding how NetGalley evolves.

Over the past week, we have been actively collecting and analyzing all the comments we've seen related to new features. We take this process very seriously, and have worked quickly to incorporate your responses into real changes.

We are happy to report that we're changing the "was this review helpful" buttons, to remove the "No" option and instead offer only a thumbs up. This change should go live next week (barring any last-minute technical issues, of course). Giving our community the ability to upvote was always the main objective for this new feature. We never intended to give the impression that members would be penalized for having downvoted reviews, so we're removing that "No" button altogether. We do, however, look forward to gaining insights into what makes reviews most helpful.

For years we've heard from members that they want more ways of connecting with each other, more tools to help discover and decide which books to request, and would love the ability to see the reviews from their fellow reviewers, librarians, booksellers, educators, and media professionals.

The goal of NetGalley has always been to help books succeed. We truly want to give your reviews the platform they deserve, to increase their visibility and value both to publishers/authors and to the overall book reviewing community. We hope this will encourage even more thoughtful reviews, community engagement, and further insight into what makes a helpful book review.

Thank you for your dedication to helping books succeed and for your support of the NetGalley service. Contact us anytime at support@netgalley.com.

All best,
The NetGalley Team

And, as promised, here's a pic of my boyfriend whom I visited yesterday at the  Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. You should go see him too even if he has been beheaded.  He's still pretty cute though, don't you think?

This exhibit was so much worth the hour trip and my $20! If any of you have an interest in spooky film memorabilia you must visit this temporary exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA.

  1. That looks like such an awesome exhibit. Your new boyfriend rocks - think wolfman is taken? I'm glad I signed up for Bingo even if I am still figuring out Booklikes and feel like I need a learning curve!

    1. He's all yours, Barb. I have enough fur in my house right now, I do not need any more! If you need any help with Booklikes let me know. Jenn (Murder by Death http://jenn.booklikes.com/) has created a ton of very helpful tutorials for almost everything you can imagine.

  4. I didn't even know NG had voting?? I do literally just go there to request books lol.

Your boyfriend is so sexy, I'm jealous ;-) Looks like a fun exhibit!

    1. Yeah, they installed it a little bit ago. So weird!

Isn't he though? He's nice and quiet too which is a bonus, lol.

  5. Crossing my fingers about the change on Netgalley. Do you think The Creature From The Black Lagoon would go for a love triangle? LOL That's one of my favorite movies.

    1. Yeah, I don't know who came up with this kooky idea to make NG a reviewing hub but I wish they hadn't.

  7. What a cool exhibit! This is the first I've heard of this about NG. I heard other things, but not this. It seems like they are trying to branch out and be a little more like Goodreads with the reviews.

    1. It's a little strange but at least they've removed that pesky troublemaking NO button today!!

  8. Looks like a fun exhibition to visit! I like that kind of thing. Well it looks like Netgalley have backed away from the worst of the issue-lets hope they stick to that decision.

    1. And that they don't come up with any more terrible ideas!

  9. Tried setting up a profile on BL but it's not working out-nothing but trouble with setting up. My blog name, theme and pic is there (sometimes) but with other peoples posts and books on it. I've spent 2 hours on this and it's driving me mad. Might just stick to GR.

    1. Sorry you're having such trouble. BL can be fiddly but I've never seen this issue happen. I am going to ask the experts at BL what is up with this (if you don't mind). Would you mind following me there so I can find you? I'm at: http://barklesswagmore.booklikes.com/

    2. Booklikes is a little weird in that when you first sign up it automatically has you following a number of people. Their post will show up in dashboard view. Maybe this is what has been happening? You can delete those people they make you auto-follow if that is what is going on.

    3. I had problems when I first signed up because I didn't realise you have to do things from dashboard rather than your blog page. Also the shelf has an icon to shift to list view where you can actually do stuff.

    4. It is set up differently than most book sites and it is confusing at first but once I figured it all out it's become second nature. I lost countless hours getting things just right though :)

  10. That's a great exhibit! Thanks for the update on Netgalley. I'm not sure what they were originally thinking. :/

  11. Look at those pouty kissable lips lol You're a lucky woman.

I hope the Netgalley thing is resolved. I wouldn't have even known what was going on without your posts though. I only pop in to request or leave my review.

    1. Haha, everyone wants him now. I should've kept his beautiful visage all to myself ;)

As of now, the NO button seems to be gone! I am so glad they listened to reader feedback! I'm still not crazy about the upvoting but I'll live with it.

    1. I hope you get a chance to visit with my boyfriend and all of the other horror goodness too. I believe it's in Salem, MA until mid-November. I'm not sure if he's packing it all up then or settling in at another museum.

  13. That looks like an awesome exhibit! I so miss the PEM - I used to go there all the time. It was free for Salem residents!

    1. It is still free for residents. If I win the lottery I'm buying a little summer house in Salem. The real estate is ridiculously expensive there.
