So I Bought Some Books . . .

It's been a craptastic few weeks so I bought some genuine hold-in-my-hand books. I guess it's better than drinking myself into a stupor or wasting money on shoes. The book pushers below tempted me so much I went out and spent my hard earned cash even though I have more books than I can read in two lifetimes.

Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix
Take a tour through the horror paperback novels of the 1970s and ’80s . . . if you dare. Page through dozens and dozens of amazing book covers featuring well-dressed skeletons, evil dolls, and knife-wielding killer crabs! Read shocking plot summaries that invoke devil worship, satanic children, and haunted real estate! Horror author and vintage paperback book collector Grady Hendrix offers killer commentary and witty insight on these trashy thrillers that tried so hard to be the next Exorcist or Rosemary’s Baby. It’s an affectionate, nostalgic, and unflinchingly funny celebration of the horror fiction boom of two iconic decades, complete with story summaries and artist and author profiles. You’ll find familiar authors, like V. C. Andrews and R. L. Stine, and many more who’ve faded into obscurity. Plus recommendations for which of these forgotten treasures are well worth your reading time and which should stay buried.

"I can't say enough about Paperbacks from Hell. It's a must read for anyone interested in the history of horror fiction, and I highly, highly recommend it."

I bought this one brand new. I never do that. It should be here in two days and I cannot wait!

34706197Just Like Hell/Mr. Gray by Nate Southard

Dillon has the world on a string. With a record-breaking football season and several scholarship offers in his pocket, he can write his own future.

But Dillon has a secret, something he’s never told the rest of his team. Even his best friends don’t know. They might not understand. They might overreact.

Now the secret is out. Maybe that’s why Dillon just woke up in the trunk of a car.

And maybe that’s why Dillon is about to go through something Just Like Hell.

Includes Nate Southard’s chilling story of demonic possession, torment, and survival, Mr. Gray.

Brian Keene and company, if you ever happen to stumble across this little post I want you to know that your friggin' ads work! I am cheap, my house and my car need work and I own more books than any sane person should but I bought this one at full price because you hypnotized me at a weak moment! Who am I kidding?!

My Real-life Book Group

18774964A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

Apparently this book is so popular with book groups that my local B&N was wiped out of stock and I had to special order it. They charged me full cover price too which surprised me a little. I figured I'd get at least 10% off for the wait and because I had to schlep all the way back to the store. Guess I'm spoiled by Amazon. Ah well, lesson learned. Now I know why the store is only busy in the cafe area :(

Did a book pusher convince you to part with some of your cash this week?

A year ago today I was reading this.

  2. You deserve it! I need to order Paperbacks from Hell too - I have to have a physical copy of this one. You know we're just going to find obscure horror books we HAVE to buy!

  3. Sorry, not sorry! :) Seriously, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. You don't get the same discount if B&N has to order it?? What a bunch of baloney. I have the audio for A Man Called Ove. I should give it a listen.

  7. You are totally entitled to book splurge after the horrible time you've had. Books are just the perfect therapy when things are crap.
