Can't Wait Wednesday: Year One by Nora Roberts

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the Jill at Breaking the Spine.

A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author―an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives…

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed―and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river―or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

Nora Roberts does the end of the world? I am intrigued and will probably do this one on audio if Overdrive gets a copy. Nora Roberts has a been a bit hit or miss for me over the years.

What book are you most excited about this week?

  1. Oh wow. This is pretty different for her. I'll be adding this one to my TBR as well.

    For What It's Worth

  2. Hmm, sounds interesting - very King-ish - but I like the science-gives-way-to-magic angle.

  3. The author seems to tackle a lot of different genres. This sounds interesting.

  4. I want to read this just because it sounds different. I honestly think Nora Roberts had found the secret to cloning. She puts out an enormous amount of books each year. Cass featured this one some time ago because you know, birds. I may even pre-order this one - that's how curious I am. Or how about a Christmas gift for myself - tis the season!

  5. oh oh oh I added this to GR!!! I always wanted to read Nora Roberts and this is the End of the World we are talking about! I'll read pretty much ANYTHING if the world is ending :)

  6. I hope you guys love it. So far the reviews have been pretty good. I'm still waiting for my number to come up at the library.
