April's Mini Horror Reviews

Here's all the horror I've been reading recently with mini reviews and links to the Horror After Dark full reviews (if I didn't DNF).

We Are Wormwood by Autumn Christian

This book is gorgeously written but it might not be for everyone. The author creates a world filled with disturbing imagery and a protagonist who is unsure herself what is real and what isn't. I LOVED it and gobbled it up but you all know I have peculiar taste, lol.  4 1/2 Stars

The Invited by Jennifer McMahon

I read roughly half of this story before throwing in the towel. I don't do this lightly but I've come to the conclusion that life is far too short to struggle with a book that doesn't mesh with me. It started off on the wrong foot and never improved. I have worked in the construction industry most of my entire working life and found the fact that two teachers building a two story house BY THEMSELVES (oh, with the help of a preteen girl) with their vast knowledge of YouTube videos, Habitat for Humanity weekends, manuals, Google-fu and "working with dad back in the day" incredibly ridiculous and unbelievable. But that's not why I quit. I quit because I was dragging myself back to the book every day and unable to read more than a few pages at a time because I found it all very predictable and dull. Maybe it picks up in the second half but I'll never know.  DNF - no rating

Dracul by Dacre Stoker & J.D. Barker

I LOVED The Fourth Monkey by J.D. Barker and was expecting big things from this Dracula prequel co-written with Dacre Stoker and I was NOT disappointed! It's filled with fantastic atmosphere, a fascinating story that grabbed me from the very beginning and some truly squirmy scenes that will stick with me for awhile.  4 1/2 Stars

Stranger Things by Gwenda Bond

This book has some very mixed reviews but I really enjoyed it.  It is less about monsters than it is about science experiments, unexpected friendships and uncovering a devious government project. It has engaging characters, is emotionally painful and lacks the humorous bits of the series but I did not want to stop reading. It’s a terrific addition to the show and a fascinating story all on its own and I highly recommend it. 4 Stars

The Dark Game by Jonathan Janz

This was a fun book. It starts off with way too many characters for my pea brain to handle but it's not too long before a few of them get killed off and I no longer have to worry about keeping track of them.  The atmosphere was well done and it's filled with some nasty surprises.  4 Stars

Cockblock by C.V. Hunt

This one gets all the stars from me. It's a violent and brutal story about a rape plague that hits the men-folk after they listen to a rambing, non-sensical broadcast from the President of the United States. It is painful to read but so cathartic in the end. It's another book that won't be for everyone but I'm giving it 5 Stars

Triple Axe by Scott Cole

Triple Axe by Scott Cole was such a fun, nutty read about a serial killer targeting porn actresses. The police won't take their reports seriously so they take it upon themselves to avenge their dead friends and stop the murdering maniac. There is blood and there are body fluids and there is much humor, if you're a twisted sort.  4 Stars

That's all of the horror for now. Have you read/seen any of them? Or read something else scary that you adored? Let me know in the comments!
