Nothing But Mini Reviews #2: A Bunch of Good Reads

Recent Mini Reviews

Because I am nothing if not lazy!

Here's a bunch of other stuff I've read recently(ish).  Again, they are mostly audio.

Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide

Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark

I HIGHLY recommend you listen to the audiobook version of this book because it is narrated by the writers and you'll miss a lot of the emotion in the words if you don't hear them tell it. I also suggest that you only pick it up only if you are a fan of the My Favorite Murder podcast - otherwise you might not get what it is all about and you'll probably be very disappointed and will be left scratching your head at the title. It's not a guidebook instructing you how to "Stay Sexy & Don't Murdered" (that's the tagline of the true-crime comedy show), it's a book about the podcasters very personal, very intimate struggles with family, mental health and their careers. As a fan of the show, I found it both interesting, painful and funny - just like the weekly podcast.

Recommended to fans of the podcast only, especially if you're super nosy like myself.

The Lady From The Black Lagoon by Mallory O'Meara

I read this over the course of a few days, took no notes so will have no review because I've read two books since and my brain can't hold on to all of that information. The Lady From The Black Lagoon is a super interesting story once you get past the pages about Patrick's dad (those bits made my eyes glaze a bit). Milicent Patrick was an artist whose name was buried under the thumb of her manly superiors who took credit for her work. Both infuriating and fascinating. Milicent Patrick certainly had an interesting life. This book felt very honest and I appreciated that. Worth a read, for sure.

This is not a "real" review but it is my quick and honest thoughts after having read every word of the book. If you don't like it skip along to the next review or, better yet, go write your own review!

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

It has been a week. A very long week. My feets are tired and my brain is tired and I have no words left in the brain. I listened to this book on audio and it was fun. In an upper middle class, serial killing couple sort of way. You'll either be into it or you won't. These people were pretty terrible people and I enjoyed the hell out of watching their lives fall into the dark pit of hell! But . . . I figured out the big twist early on so though I was happy to feel smart for a moment, it was a wee bit of bummer to figure it out so early. I think I've been reading too many of these! I may revisit it again at some point and write a real review but for now this is all I've got.

Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman

4 1/2 stars but I'm bumping it up to a five because this is an intense book that is going to stick with me and likely one I'll listen to more than once and when is GR going to give us 1/2 stars? It's not a four star book because I loved too much of it, too much of it had my emotions all tied up. I'm not writing a review because I was selfish and listened just for me. It's read excellently and emotionally by Armie Hammer who was also fantastic in the film version. It's a painfully honest look at a life-changing relationship between a 17 year old and a man seven years his senior who stays with their family for 6 weeks. It is filled with doubt, longing, ache, desire and anguish. I love emotional reads like this one. I only bumped off half a star because a few parts were a bit draggy, imo.

4 1/2 Stars

  4. Most of these books are on my radar but I haven't read any of them yet. I have a partial arc of Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered which I have done nothing with but thought I might check out the audiobook. Call Me By Your Name sounds amazing!

    1. I' d do the audio, for sure. They narrate it and there's some real, raw emotion there. I hate it when they send me partial ARC's :(
