Mini Review Dump #7: The 3 and below version
Recent Mini Reviews
Let's face it, most of my reviews lately are what most people consider "mini" anyhow. Most of the time I'd rather be reading than writing an essay deconstructing every part of a book, so it is what it is. Here are the quick takes and the thoughtless thoughts about the recent(ish) books I've read. This week it's a mix-up of genres. Nothing rated higher than a three but sometimes that happens.
When She's Shy by Ruby Dixon
⭐⭐⭐
I haven't read anything in the Risdaverse (unless those blue alien books are Risdaverse books? If so, I'm a dummy because I have read a few of them) but this stands all on its own pretty well and now I want to read more so I guess it did its job. I didn't have any pesky questions besides is "Risadaverse" set on Not Hoth? It's short (less than 50 pgs, I think) and the romance is super rushed because, well, it's less than 50 pages but it's a sweet and quick read. No real character or romance development but it was an easy, breezy story that did not annoy me.
Ruby by V.C. Andrews
⭐⭐1/2
I think it's best if I don't revisit these books. I am sad to say that I found Ruby melodramatic, repetitive and a bit boring. Ruby is just too perfectly perfect and naive. I finished it but have no desire to reread the rest in the series. I think I'll have to stick to the Lifetime movies which are super melodramatic but also culled so they're never boring. It's closer to a 2 than a 3 so I'm giving it a 2.5.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid
⭐⭐⭐
I don’t know how the heck to rate this one. Since it’s an older book and I’m years late I’m not even going to bother summing it all up. It messed with my head, and it kept me guessing and I understand why people want to throw it in a flaming dumpster, but I loved how hard it tried to break my brain. I *almost* had it but turns out I really didn’t, lol. I know this makes no sense but I’m not spoiling things for anyone wanting to read it that hasn’t managed to get around to it yet. We can't all be speedy new releases readers, eh? What I wasn’t thrilled with were all of the tedious conversations during the car ride that seemed to go on for an eternity - oof. It was weird, it was confusing and I think I enjoyed it and now I want to visit DQ and get myself a Blizzard.
I like your quick takes on books! so yay for your mini reviews. :D
ReplyDeleteI haven't re-read any of the VC Andrews but I do remember really liking the books.
