Books from the Backlog: Brand New Cherry Flavor by Todd Grimson

Carole @ Carole's Random Life In Books has created a fun new feature called Books from the Backlog to spotlight neglected and unloved books that have been sitting on your bookshelf for too long.

If you would like to join in, click the pic above to find out more.

My Neglected Book of the Week is Brand New Cherry Flavor by Todd GrimsonI bought this book when it was released back in 1997. Yep. I should be ashamed. It feel to the bottom of a storage bin where it has remained until recently when I decided to hunt for Afterage by Yvonne Navarro.

The Goodreads Blurbage:

"Hollywood never tasted so good. Todd Crimson serves up a hip and chilling adventure through Tinsel Town's hot spots, delirious dreams, and vengeance-soaked mystical rituals in this "bridge between classic American hard-boiled and the lushest tangles of magical realism." (Katherine Dunn, bestselling author of "Geek Love" )Lisa Nova has it all -- talent, brains, beauty, and a mean streak that won't let her sit back and get screwed out of what she deserves. But when her thirst for revenge introduces her to a thousand-year-old Mayan witch doctors, her link to the Afterworld puts a bizarre twist on, among other things, her already none-too-bland sexual appetites.

When a totally hip Hollywood meets a harrowing ancient ritualistic curse anything can happen and does in this extravagant novel. Now in a trade paperback edition.

"Todd Crimson is the hippest writer currently operating in America. He's a master of noir; he's a master of Theater of the Absurd; he's a brilliant prose stylist. He's profane, he's howlingly funny. Stories within stories unfurl in his books and you don't know whether to laugh, wretch, or cry. Dig Crimson--he's one of the American writers to ride with into the new century."--James Ellroy, author of American Tabloid"

Why did I add this book to my tbr pile? More than likely I bought it because of the Katherine Dunn blurb and the vampires but truly I do not know. I may have seen it sitting on a shelf and grabbed it because of the cover. I can't remember what I did yesterday, never mind why I bought a book back in 1997!

Do you think I should read it?!

  3. Thanks for joining in! I wonder how many books I bought when they first came out and then did nothing with them. I am wonder if a book that was hip 21 years ago will still be hip today. You should read this one and let us know :)

  5. That is an enthusiastic blurb. LOL 1997... I don't think I'd even remember why I bought something then, either. Tastes and moods change so much for me that I'm not sure I'd try to read it, but vampires...

    1. I know, right? With a blurb like that I'm surprised it kind of fell off the radar.

  6. I say start it, but if it doesn't grab you quickly, move on. (I'm impressed that you remember how long ago you bought it; I can't remember what books I bought two years ago let alone 20.) :)

    1. I looked at the pub date. It's a first edition and I remember buying it new in some sort of book buying fever when I barely had any money.
