Books From The Backlog: The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes

Carole @ Carole's Random Life In Books has created a fun feature called Books from the Backlog to spotlight neglected and unloved books that have been sitting on your bookshelf for too long.

If you would like to join in, click the pic above to find out more.

My Neglected Book of the Week is The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes which has a 3.49 rating on Goodreads. My friend's reviews are all over the map and range from 2's to all the stars. They say things like, "The thing was this book reads so slow that I kept falling asleep" and "The Shining Girls is a horrid and nightmarish tale but so completely intense and unforgettable that it's certain to leave a lasting impression" and "frustrating"  and "This was a very cool book with a fantastic premise and executed brilliantly. I think it deserves 5 stars for keeping me so hooked, and that's exactly what I'm going to give it". I trust these people, all of them! This is why it continues to sit here unread, unloved and longing for a little affection.

The Goodreads Blurbage:

The Girl Who Wouldn't Die Hunts the Killer Who Shouldn't Exist

The future is not as loud as war, but it is relentless. It has a terrible fury all its own.

Harper Curtis is a killer who stepped out of the past. Kirby Mazrachi is the girl who was never meant to have a future.

Kirby is the last shining girl, one of the bright young women, burning with potential, whose lives Harper is destined to snuff out after he stumbles on a House in Depression-era Chicago that opens on to other times.

At the urging of the House, Harper inserts himself into the lives of the shining girls, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. He's the ultimate hunter, vanishing into another time after each murder, untraceable-until one of his victims survives.

Determined to bring her would-be killer to justice, Kirby joins the Chicago Sun-Times to work with the ex-homicide reporter, Dan Velasquez, who covered her case. Soon Kirby finds herself closing in on the impossible truth . . .

The Shining Girls is a masterful twist on the serial killer tale: a violent quantum leap featuring a memorable and appealing heroine in pursuit of a deadly criminal.

Why did I add this book to my tbr pile?

I bought into the early hype and then the meh reviews started arriving. I'll give it a go one of these days but I'm a little worried that it won't work for me.

You can find yourself a copy of The Shining Girls at  Amazon

  1. I have to say, not really my kind of book, the plot itself would confuse me to no end it would be frustrating

  2. I thought I had read this one when I first looked but I realized that it is another book when I went to take a look on Goodreads, I realized that I had read actually read Broken Monsters. I didn't really care for Broken Monsters so I am a bit nervous about picking up any other books from this author. I do hope that you enjoy it though!

  3. I HAVE THAT TYPEWRITER! lol

I've worked my way through most of my ALA books so it's back to the TBR pile for me so I might start joining in Backlog posts soon. Just for the kick in the pants/reminder of what I have.

  4. I haven't read this one yet either. Some of the reviews I read made me hesitate, and then I kind of forgot about it. *sheepish wink*
