Horror Film Friday: Catch Up Time!

I have sadly neglected this little feature, as I have done with many things in my life, but I have NOT stopped watching horror films. If anything, I have been watching more than ever now that I've discovered party watches via Netflix and Prime. Here are some mini reviews of my recent watches. If you're on Twitter or Letterboxd you might've seen these already (sorry about that!).

In Search of Darkness: A Journey Into Iconic 80's Horror

An exploration of ’80s horror movies through the perspective of the actors, directors, producers and SFX craftspeople who made them, and their impact on contemporary cinema.

My two cents for free!

I fell asleep watching this last night not because it’s boring or because I’m lame (we’ll that’s up in the air) but because it’s 4 hours long and honestly I could watch 8 hours or more of this! It’s an excellent documentary and a love letter to all the 80’s films I so love. It makes me a little sad thinking about the loss of video stores and how my friends and I would spend half the summer inside them looking for horror movies we hadn’t yet seen. Shudder is great but there’s nothing like digging through a physical horror section and putting your paws all over them and bringing a few home. Anyhow, if you’re a fan of 80’s horror films you shouldn’t miss this. It is the PAPERBACKS FROM HELL for horror films and the interviews are fantastic. out of 5

The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

THE LAST THING HIS VICTIMS SAW... WAS HIS CAMERA.
When hundreds of videotapes showing torture, murder and dismemberment are found in an abandoned house, they reveal a serial killer's decade-long reign of terror and become the most disturbing collection of evidence homicide detectives have ever seen. Currently streaming at Amazon.

My two cents for free!

I’ve been wanting to watch this for years and years and finally caught it on prime. I think the hype built around it was a bit much and led to a tragic and inevitable case of disappointment for me. Podcasters all over the horrorverse adore it or adored it when it was first released and they all had screeners or saw it at festivals. Now it's a decade+ old found footage film and though it was decent enough and parts of it were horribly disturbing it was definitely not the “scariest fucking thing I’ve ever seen” as so many hyped it up to be. I likely would've rated it higher had I seen it 13 years ago when I was a little less grumpier. And thems my useless thoughts. A generous 3 out of 5.

All Cheerleaders Die (2013)

YOU CAN’T KILL THEIR SPIRIT
When tragedy rocks Blackfoot High, rebellious outsider Maddy Killian shocks the student body by joining the cheerleading squad. This decision drives a rift between Maddy and her ex-girlfriend Leena Miller — a loner who claims to practice the dark arts. After a confrontation with the football team, Maddy and her new cheerleader friends are sent on a supernatural roller coaster ride which leaves a path of destruction none of them may be able to escape. Remake of their own 2001 feature film. Currently streaming on Shudder

My two cents for free!

This was insane but I mean that in a good way. It's a blissfully crazed revenge film that takes unexpected turns and unashamedly goes completely off the rails at many points but that’s sort of what the times call for currently, right? 3.5 out of 5

Have any horror film recommendations for me? Let me have 'em in the comments!

  5. So I think I need to find the Cheerleader movie. It sounds like fun. Have you watched Vampires vs. The Bronx on Netflix yet? We really enjoyed it and it's fairly new.
