Horror Film Friday Returns with The Gorge | Military Sci-fi Horror Film

Image
An evergreen reminder because although every year I grow older, I will never change. If you're new here, please know that my film reviews are crap and never to be taken seriously because I do not take notes and my memory is an unreliable thing but if you're okay with that, well, here's another! It's been a while since I posted a horror movie review. Lately I tend to watch them, log them on Letterbxd  (friend me if you feel like it) and then mostly forget all about them. Anyhow, here's one I watched a little bit ago. Have you seen it? The Gorge, 2025 Synopsis Two highly-trained operatives are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical ...

Horror Film Friday Returns with Gargoyles

Image
It's been a while since I posted a ridiculous horror movie review because I usually watch them with glee and am too lazy to take any notes and then I forget everything the next morning. Anyhow, here's my recent experience with a childhood favorite written at 1am when I couldn't sleep - when I do all my best writing haha. Have you seen it? Gargoyles 1972 Directed by Bill L. Norton Synopsis WATCH OUT! THE GARGOYLES ARE HERE After receiving word about a mysterious carcass/skeleton unearthed in the Arizona desert, a father and his daughter decide to remove it from the burial grounds for further study. Once they do so, they, as well as the town, are besieged by a colony of gargoyles living in some nearby caverns. My Two Cents for Free! “Bones. I smell old bones.” Mmmmm When I was a weird little kid this movie used to play on Creature Double Feature and my sister and I would run around with the other bratty neighborhood kids and pretend we were Gargoyles every time they played it...

Nightmare Fuel: The Science of Horror Films by Nina Nesseth | Book Review

Image
Like horror movies?  Nightmare Fuel by Nina Nesmith Released February 2021 Source: Received for Review Consideration Goodreads   | Amazon Nightmare Fuel by Nina Nesseth is a pop-science look at fear, how and why horror films get under our skin, and why we keep coming back for more. Do you like scary movies? Have you ever wondered why? Nina Nesseth knows what scares you. She also knows why. In Nightmare Fuel, Nesseth explores the strange and often unexpected science of fear through the lenses of psychology and physiology. How do horror films get under our skin? What about them keeps us up at night, even days later? And why do we keep coming back for more? Horror films promise an experience: fear. From monsters that hide in plain sight to tension-building scores, every aspect of a horror film is crafted to make your skin crawl. But how exactly do filmmakers pull this off? The truth is, there’s more to it than just loud noises and creepy images. With the affection of a true horro...

Horror Film Friday:And We Have a 4 Star!

Image
I have sadly neglected this little feature, as I have done with many things in my life, but I have NOT stopped watching horror films. If anything, I have been watching more than ever now that I've discovered party watches via Netflix and Prime. Here are some mini reviews of my recent watches. If you're on  Twitter  or  Letterboxd  you might've seen these already (sorry about that!).  Today I'm going to start out with the three star movie and work my way up to the four star. We Have Always Lived In the Castle (2018) In Shirleyville, Vermont, during the sixties, sisters Merricat and Constance, along with their ailing uncle Julian, confined to a wheelchair, live isolated in a big mansion located on the hill overlooking the town, tormented by the memories of a family tragedy occurred six years ago. The arrival of cousin Charles will threaten the fragile equilibrium of their minds, haunted by madness, fear and superstition. Streaming on Netflix My...

They don’t know where they are—or how they got there. In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, ruthless elitists gather at a remote location to hunt humans for sport. But their master plan is about to be derailed when one of the hunted turns the tables on her pursuers. Rental available on Amazon. My two cents for free! In Search of Darkness: A Journey Into Iconic 80's Horror An exploration of ’80s horror movies through the perspective of the actors, directors, producers and SFX craftspeople who made them, and their impact on contemporary cinema. My two cents for free! I fell asleep watching this last night not because it’s boring or because I’m lame (we’ll that’s up in the air) but because it’s 4 hours long and honestly I could watch 8 hours or more of this! It’s an excellent documentary and a love letter to all the 80’s films I so love. It makes me a little sad thinking about the los...
