Horror Film Friday:And We Have a 4 Star!

I have sadly neglected this little feature, as I have done with many things in my life, but I have NOT stopped watching horror films. If anything, I have been watching more than ever now that I've discovered party watches via Netflix and Prime. Here are some mini reviews of my recent watches. If you're on Twitter or Letterboxd you might've seen these already (sorry about that!).

Today I'm going to start out with the three star movie and work my way up to the four star.

We Have Always Lived In the Castle (2018)

In Shirleyville, Vermont, during the sixties, sisters Merricat and Constance, along with their ailing uncle Julian, confined to a wheelchair, live isolated in a big mansion located on the hill overlooking the town, tormented by the memories of a family tragedy occurred six years ago. The arrival of cousin Charles will threaten the fragile equilibrium of their minds, haunted by madness, fear and superstition.

My two cents for free!

I was really looking forward to this movie and I know I'm gonna sound like the "get off my lawn" lady here but, well, I suppose I will own that title now because I would say read this book instead of watching this movie. I think it is excellent. It is very evenly paced and steeped in atmosphere and full of suspense and dark secrets and dread and it really gets deep into Merricat's head. All things that weren't working for me in this film's first half. I felt the tone of the first half was off, the wardrobe choices for Merricat were . . . odd and the music didn't help matters. It didn't feel like the gothic story I had imagined in my head and I suppose that is my fault. Anyhow, read the book first because, honestly, if you haven't you might be a bit confused by some of this. The villain was certainly villainous and the most awful of all the movie Chad's and the story did pick up somewhere after the midway point when it turned more into the movie I was hoping it would've been from the beginning but you may need a whole bunch of patience to get through that first half and I simply have none, tbh.

⭐⭐⭐

Blood Vessel (2019)

Near the end of World War II, the survivors of a torpedoed hospital ship cling to life aboard a crowded lifeboat. With no food, water, or shelter, all seems lost – until an eerily silent German minesweeper drifts ominously towards them, giving them one last chance at survival. As our motley crew explores the ship, it becomes all too clear that some diabolical fate has befallen its German crew. The mystery only deepens when they encounter a young Romanian girl, apparently the sole survivor, who leads them to a locked room in the bowels of the vessel.

My two cents for free!

This was a nicely gory, claustrophobic film with the cutest monsters (or at least I thought so, probably the only who ever thought so) but it was wee bit predictable and the men were SO dumb 😹. I kept screaming at them but not a single one listened to me, as usual.

Streaming on Shudder.

⭐⭐⭐1/2

Tammy and the T-Rex (1994)

HE’S THE COOLEST PET IN TOWN!
An evil scientist implants the brain of Michael, a murdered high school student, in an animatronic Tyrannosaurus. He escapes, wreaks vengeance on his high school tormentors and is reunited with his sweetheart Tammy. Together, the couple try to elude the mad scientist and the police and find a more appropriate vessel for Michael’s brain.

My two cents for free!

How did I miss this crazy gem until now?! At its core it’s about sweet, pure love and it’s gloriously gory and completely ridiculous too 😹

Streaming on Shudder.

Have any horror film recommendations for me? Let me have 'em in the comments!

Comments

  1. Train to Busan was the last GOOD horror movie I saw. I thought We Have Always Lived in the Catle was okay. The book was better, but it seems that's always the case!
